Hermes Chat

Hermes Chat is a revolutionary messaging platform that prioritizes your privacy by eliminating user IDs entirely. Unlike other messengers, it uses temporary anonymous pairwise identifiers for unmatched metadata protection. Connect securely with friends, family, or colleagues without compromising your data.

Features

End-to-end encrypted messages with markdown and editing capabilities

Send richly formatted messages securely, with the ability to edit them post-delivery. Your conversations stay private and flexible.

Securely send images, videos, and files with end-to-end encryption

Share media and documents confidently, knowing they’re protected from unauthorized access. Privacy extends to all your shared content.

Decentralized group chats that only members know exist

Create private group conversations invisible to servers or outsiders. Only group members have access to the chat.

End-to-end encrypted voice messages for private communication

Record and send voice notes with complete privacy. Your audio messages are secure from interception.

Disappearing messages for added control over your data

Set messages to vanish after a specified time for enhanced privacy. Maintain control over your conversation history.

Portable encrypted app storage to move profiles across devices

Transfer your chat data securely to a new device. Your encrypted profile stays with you, wherever you go.

Security

Temporary anonymous pairwise identifiers for each contact or group member

Each connection uses unique, temporary IDs to hide your identity. Metadata privacy is maximized with no traceable user profiles.

Out-of-band key exchange via QR codes or links to prevent MITM attacks

Share keys securely through QR codes or links to ensure safe communication. This blocks man-in-the-middle attacks effectively.

Double-ratchet protocol with perfect forward secrecy and break-in recovery

Messages stay secure even if a key is compromised, with automatic recovery. Your past and future chats remain protected.

NaCL cryptobox in each queue to prevent traffic correlation if TLS is compromised

Encrypts message queues separately to block traffic analysis. Even if TLS fails, your data stays untraceable.

Message integrity verification with sequential numbering and hashing

Ensures no message is altered or removed by verifying sequence and hashes. Recipients are alerted to any tampering attempts.

Additional server encryption layer to obscure traffic correlation

Extra encryption hides message patterns from servers. This prevents linking sent and received messages.

Secure authenticated TLS 1.2/1.3 transport with strong algorithms

Uses robust TLS protocols to secure client-server connections. Prevents session attacks with strong encryption standards.

Optional Tor access to protect your IP address

Connect via Tor to hide your IP, enhancing anonymity. Your location remains private from servers and observers.

FAQ

Hermes Chat Chat (Hermes build) is available only on Hermes OS. It’s bundled with Hermes and cannot be downloaded from any app store or website, and we do not provide standalone APKs.

Hermes Chat uses end-to-end encryption and no user identifiers (no phone numbers, emails, or usernames). You share contact addresses (QR/links) you control. There’s no central account—conversation data and keys stay only on the device.

Servers relay encrypted payloads and basic delivery events; they can’t read message content. Because there are no global IDs, there’s no central “who-talks-to-whom” graph. For minimal exposure, use short-lived contact addresses, rotate them per project/campaign, and keep Hermes Chat within a locked-down Hermes work profile with least-privilege permissions.

Publish a contact address (QR/link) for inbound messages. You can issue unique addresses per team, partner, or campaign and retire/replace any address at any time—no phone numbers or public usernames to clean up.

Data is local (no cloud account to pull from). On Hermes OS, use a strong passphrase with PIN scrambling, enable auto-reboot to return data to rest, keep USB at charging-only when locked, and set a duress PIN/password for irreversible wipe. If needed, trigger a distance wipe directly from your Hermes account.

Yes. Define a local retention policy (e.g., scheduled on-device exports if required), keep encrypted backups under your control, minimize what you collect, and rotate/delete contact addresses on a fixed schedule. Because messages are E2E-encrypted and there’s no central account or identifier, you reduce third-party exposure while enforcing your own governance.
